SOUTH AFRICANS FOR A BASIC INCOME GRANT

At a press conference in Parliament on 3 July 2001, the South African Council of Churches joined a broad coalition of civil society organisations calling for the introduction of a Basic Income Grant as a key intervention in the struggle against poverty and inequality.

The participating organisations presented Prof. Viviene Taylor, chair of the Committee of Inquiry into a Comprehensive Social Security System for South Africa, with a Declaration of Principles for a Basic Income Grant.

A SACC made a statement in support of the Basic Income Grant, as did the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and the South African National NGO Coalition (SANGOCO).

The coalition also distributed a background briefing on the grant.
