PARLIAMENTARY MONITORING GROUP
PMG is a civil society initiative which monitors the legislative process. PMG-trained volunteers keep track of committee proceedings and post unofficial minutes on the site. There is also an extensive archive of submissions on legislation.

SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT
The official homepage of the South African Government, with an extensive and searchable collection of government documents and speeches, as well as links to Executive departments, Parliament, the Judiciary and political parties.

SA GOVERNMENT INFORMATION
Uwembi's Government Information page predated the official South African government homepage, and it remains a useful alternative which some people find easier to navigate.

SOUTH AFRICAN PARLIAMENT
The official site for the Parliament of South Africa contains links to legislation, committee information, question papers, schedules, and other documents.

SOUTH AFRICAN LAW COMMISSION
The Law Commission plays an important role in developing new legislation. Their site offers discussion papers and issue papers that inform emerging legislation on a range of issues, especially related to criminal justice and family law. Includes links to Constitutional Court decisions.


In its monitoring, advocacy and campaign work, the Public Policy Liaison Unit works closely with other civil society organisations, including:

COSATU
The Congress of South African Trade Unions is South Africa's main labour federation, representing close to two million workers.

SANGOCO
The South African National NGO Coalition is the primary co-ordinating body for the NGO sector in South Africa.

BASIC INCOME GRANT COALITION
The Basic Income Grant Coalition is an alliance of 30 civil society organisations campaigning for the introduction of a universal income support grant to eradicate destitution and stimulate local economies.

ESSET
The Ecumenical Service for Socio-Economic Transformation is a research institution closely related to the SACC.

THE BLACK SASH
Formed in 1955 as a women's anti-apartheid movement, the Black Sash is a non-profit organisation dedicated to ensuring the recognition and protection of the human and socio-economic rights of all South Africans.

IDASA
The Institute for Democracy in South Africa operates a number of important projects including the Budget Information Service, the Parliamentary Information and Monitoring Service, the Chapter 2 Network and the Open Democracy Advice Centre.

QUAKER PEACE CENTRE
The Quaker Peace Center plays an important role in peace-building, mediation, and community development. QPC is a member of the Executive Committee of the Coalition for Defence Alternatives.

GUN CONTROL ALLIANCE
The Gun Control Alliance lobbies for strong legislation to stop gun violence in our society. Their site contains a number of research reports.

SOUTH AFRICAN HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION
The Human Rights Commission is one of the State Institutions Supporting Constitutional Democracy created in terms of Chapter 9 of the South African Constitution.

COMMISSION FOR GENDER EQUALITY
Another Chapter 9 institution with which the SACC has worked closely on campaigns against domestic violence and in support of the extension of Unemployment Insurance benefits to domestic and seasonal workers.

MAIL & GUARDIAN ON-LINE
A daily updated on-line version of the South African weekly newspaper.

INDEPENDENT ON-LINE
The site is updated each day with material from the Cape Times, Cape Argus, Business Report, The Star, the Mercury and the Daily News. The Saturday Star and Sunday Independent material is included on the weekends.

BEYERS NAUDE CENTRE FOR PUBLIC THEOLOGY
An institute of the University of Stellenbosch's Faculty of Theology, the Beyers Naudé Centre assists Christians and church bodies in identifying, describing and fulfilling their responsibility in the various public spheres of the democratic South African society, namely in politics, economics, civil society and public opinion.

RESEARCH INSTITUTE ON CHRISTIANITY IN SOUTH AFRICA
Based at the University of Cape Town, RICSA is particularly concerned with the role of religion in public life.

TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION

CENTRE FOR THE STUDY OF VIOLENCE AND RECONCILIATION
The CSVR site has a lot of interesting links. Plus they share office space with the Public Policy Liaison Unit at St. George's Cathedral in Cape Town!
